The best flowers for Mother’s Day

The best flowers for Mother’s Day

We certainly don’t need a special day to celebrate our mums and mother figures that’s for sure. That said, Mother’s Day (or Mothering Sunday) has become the day to go the extra mile and show them just how much we love and appreciate them, and this year, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday 30th March.

There are many ways to make this day extra special, and it could be through thoughtful actions like preparing breakfast in bed, cooking a delicious meal, or tackling a household chore she dislikes—perhaps washing the windows or tidying up the garden for spring.

Thoughtful gifts are another wonderful way to express our gratitude. The best gifts are those that feel like a special treat, something she wouldn’t necessarily buy for herself—her favourite chocolates, a beloved perfume, a relaxing afternoon tea, or the most classic Mother’s Day gift: flowers.

The history of Mother’s Day

The tradition of Mother’s Day dates back to the Middle Ages when children as young as ten would leave home to work. Over time, a custom emerged that allowed workers who had moved away to return home to visit their families and their ‘mother’ churches on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This day became known as Mothering Sunday in Britain, and because the dates of Lent vary each year, so does the date of Mother’s Day.

Choosing the perfect flowers for Mother’s Day

Since Mother’s Day falls in spring, seasonal blooms make a floral gift super special. While some flowers are available year-round, certain varieties are especially cherished for their association with this time of year.

Here are our top flower choices that we’ll be featuring in our Mother’s Day bouquets:

Tulips – We opt for interesting double or parrot tulip varieties in a huge mix of soft and vibrant colours.

Hyacinths – Delightfully scented stems featuring clusters of tiny blossoms, usually in shades of blue, pink, lilac and white.

Mimosa – A bright and cheerful bright yellow flower, often seen as a symbol of spring’s arrival.

Anemones – Stunning blooms with open petals and striking, usually black centres in shades of purple, white, red, and pink.

Hellebores – Elegant, nodding flowers in delicate hues of white, pink, and burgundy.

Ranunculus – Lush, multi-petalled flowers that resemble miniature peonies or roses, they look delicate but are surprisingly long lasting.

Freesias – Wonderfully fragrant, trumpet- shaped flowers, available in a variety of soft pastel shades.

Alstroemeria – Also known as Peruvian lilies, these long-lasting flowers (up to 3 weeks in a vase) come in a huge range of colours.

Narcissus – Classic spring blooms, including daffodils and paperwhites, that symbolise renewal and joy. As an added bonus, we always choose scented Narcissus varieties.

Roses – Not a spring flower but a timeless British garden flower that we adore using. They come in a huge range of soft and vibrant colours, and are available all year round.

Carnations – Another year-round flower, with ruffled full flower heads in mostly soft colours which is traditionally associated with Mother’s Day, symbolising love and admiration.

Stocks – a late spring British garden flower, now available most of the year, we love them for their amazing soft, spicy scent and their fluffy multi-flowered stems.

No matter which flowers you choose, a carefully created bouquet or vase arrangement will bring joy and brighten your mum’s special day. Can’t stretch the budget to a bouquet? Then a beautifully wrapped bunch of a single variety such as tulips or hyacinths are equally wonderful. Whichever you choose, the thought and love behind the gesture will not go unnoticed and every time she passes by and looks at those flowers she’ll think of you.

A flower delivery can make the gift of flowers even more of an event, and of course we hand deliver bouquets in and around Edinburgh, including on Mother’s Day weekend over both Saturday and Sunday.
