Spring flowers - top tips for perfect pots and container gardening
Share
The arrival of spring inevitably has us thinking about spending more time outdoors with the longer days and warmer weather, and that little glimpse we get of what the summer ahead may hold.
And for those of us who love flowers and are lucky enough to have a garden, a small patio, a balcony, or even just the space to have a window box, getting our hands in the soil and planting up pots with our favourite flowers and plants is part of the transition into the new season.
Container gardening, in a selection of beautiful pots, makes gardening more accessible, less daunting and easier for amateurs to manage, not to mention visually wonderful and life affirming. And if you group pots together, it makes your spaces feel abundant without actually having lots and lots of plants.
Whilst growing a garden from seed has to be one of the most rewarding experiences, it does take time, vision and patience! So we can all cheat a little and speed up the whole process if we wish and plant up our pots with more mature plants and flowers for an instant garden.
One of our favourite brands that we’ve stocked for years is Danish heritage brand Bergs Potter.
They have the most wonderful, timeless designs in raw and glazed terracotta and have the pots and saucers in a huge range of sizes and colours.
So this month we’re sharing their journal post, Awakening Spaces:A Spring Ritual with lots of tips on how to bring spring to your home and outdoor spaces.
Here’s a summary…
1. Create a Blooming Entrance
Fill pots with tulips or other spring or early summer flowers to greet guests with a cheerful splash of colour at your front door. A mix of pinks, whites, and pastels works beautifully to set a welcoming tone.
2. Maximise Small Garden Spaces
If your garden is still waking up from winter, a table filled with potted spring flowers can instantly brighten things up. Grouping different-sized pots with spring flowers and green herbs creates a fresh and inviting focal point.
3. Bring the Outdoors In
A glass vase filled with flowers such as fresh mimosa, tulips or budding branches is an easy way to infuse your interior with spring vibes. Place it on a kitchen counter, bedside table, or windowsill to spread light and joy throughout your home.
4. Embrace the Seedling Season
Now is the time to start sowing seeds indoors. Use a mix of small and medium-sized pots in a garden shed or a sunny windowsill, and watch your seedlings thrive until they are ready for the garden.
5. Rotate Your Potted Plants
Pots allow you to easily move flowers and greenery around. Place vibrant blooms in key spots when entertaining, then shift them to catch the best sunlight or create a new focal point in your garden.
6. Add Layers of Greenery
Combine tall and short pots to create depth and visual interest. Placing Muscari, Daffodils, and Hyacinths in varying pot sizes can add charm and a sense of abundance to your outdoor spaces.
7. Watering Tip
Terracotta pots are naturally porous, which is great for plant health. However, during the early spring, when temperatures fluctuate, monitor the soil moisture levels to prevent over-watering while also ensuring your plants don’t dry out.
